Every salesperson seems to have a different number they want you to pay attention to.
These ratings are useful, but only when you understand what they measure and how they relate to your home. A window with the lowest number in one category is not automatically the best window for every house. Oklahoma homeowners need to consider summer heat, winter cold, strong winds, direct sunlight, and how the window will actually be installed.
Here is a straightforward explanation of the numbers you are likely to see while comparing replacement windows.
Most reputable replacement windows come with a label from the National Fenestration Rating Council, commonly called the NFRC label. Think of it as the window industry’s version of the information sticker found on a new appliance.
The label allows homeowners to compare products using the same testing standards. It normally includes ratings for:
Not every label displays every category, but U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient are usually the two numbers discussed most often.
One important detail is that the rating should apply to the entire window—not only the center of the glass. A window is made up of glass, spacers, sashes, frames, weatherstripping, and locks. All those components affect its overall performance.
U-factor measures how easily heat passes through a window. The lower the U-factor, the better the window is at slowing heat transfer.
This matters during both Oklahoma winters and summers. In the winter, a lower U-factor helps reduce the amount of indoor heat escaping through the window. During the summer, it helps slow the movement of outdoor heat into the home.
You might see one window with a U-factor of .30 and another rated at .27. The .27 window provides better insulating performance, assuming both ratings were measured under the same recognized testing standards.
That does not mean homeowners should chase the lowest number available without considering anything else. Small improvements can increase the price, and the additional cost may not make sense for every home. The goal is to find a well-built window with an appropriate rating for Oklahoma—not simply the most expensive window on the list.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, usually shortened to SHGC, measures how much heat from the sun is allowed to pass through the window.
This rating runs between zero and one. A lower number means the window blocks more solar heat. A higher number means it allows more solar heat into the house.
SHGC can be especially important in Oklahoma because of our long, hot summers. Windows facing west often receive intense afternoon sun, while south-facing windows can receive substantial sunlight for much of the day. If those windows allow too much solar heat inside, the room may feel noticeably warmer and the air conditioner may have to work harder to keep up.
A lower SHGC can help control that unwanted heat. However, going extremely low can also make the glass look darker and reduce some natural light, depending on the glass package.
This is why the right SHGC is not determined by a single advertising claim. Window direction, shade trees, roof overhangs, exterior color, and the homeowner’s preference for natural light should all be considered.
These two ratings are often confused.
U-factor measures heat transfer through the complete window assembly. SHGC measures heat entering the home from sunlight.
A window can have good insulating performance and still allow more solar heat than you want. It can also block a great deal of solar heat while having a less impressive insulating value.
For most Northeast Oklahoma homes, both numbers deserve attention. We have hot summers, but we also get freezing temperatures and sharp weather changes during winter. Choosing a balanced glass package is generally more practical than focusing on only one number.
Visible Transmittance, or VT, tells you how much natural light passes through the window.
A higher VT allows more visible light into the room. A lower rating allows less.
For example, a window with a VT of .54 will generally admit more daylight than one with a VT of .44. That does not necessarily make one better than the other. Some homeowners want a brighter room, while others are trying to reduce glare or afternoon heat.

When comparing windows, look at the actual glass in person if possible. Two products can have similar energy ratings but look different when viewed from inside the home.
Low-E stands for low emissivity. A Low-E coating is an extremely thin layer applied to the glass to help control heat transfer and solar energy.
You normally cannot see the coating itself, although some glass packages may have a slight tint when viewed from certain angles. Different Low-E coatings are designed to provide different levels of solar control.
In Oklahoma, Low-E glass can help reduce summer heat coming through the windows while also improving year-round insulating performance. It may also reduce the amount of ultraviolet exposure reaching flooring, furniture, and curtains.
The term “Low-E” alone does not tell you everything. There are different coatings and glass combinations available. Ask which glass package is included in your quote and request the actual NFRC ratings for that configuration.
Many double-pane windows are filled with argon gas between the panes. Argon is denser than regular air and helps reduce heat movement through the insulated glass unit.
It is one part of the window’s energy-efficiency package, but it should not be treated as a magic feature. Argon works together with the glass, Low-E coating, spacer system, frame, and weatherstripping.
A salesperson may emphasize argon because it sounds impressive. What matters more is the tested performance of the complete window. The NFRC label provides a better comparison than relying on a list of individual features.
Air Leakage measures the amount of air that can pass through the window assembly under controlled testing conditions. Lower is better.
This rating is particularly worth asking about in Oklahoma. Strong winds can expose weak weatherstripping, loose-fitting sashes, and poor installation. A window may have respectable glass ratings but still feel drafty if the operating parts do not seal tightly.
Air leakage is also different from air entering around the window frame. Laboratory ratings test the manufactured window. They do not correct a careless installation.
If the opening is not properly prepared, insulated, sealed, and finished, air can get around the entire unit even when the window itself has a good rating. Product quality and installation quality have to work together.
Condensation Resistance estimates how well a window resists moisture forming on its interior surface. A higher number indicates better resistance.
This rating can be helpful, but no window can guarantee that condensation will never appear. Indoor humidity, outdoor temperature, air circulation, curtains, blinds, and the location of heating vents can all affect surface condensation.
Moisture between the panes is a different issue. If condensation or haze is trapped inside an insulated glass unit, that normally indicates the glass seal has failed.
A new window with a better U-factor and a warmer interior glass surface may reduce condensation under comparable conditions. However, excessive humidity inside the house still needs to be addressed.
ENERGY STAR certification is a useful starting point. It shows that a product meets energy-performance requirements established for a particular climate zone.
It does not mean every ENERGY STAR window is identical, and it does not tell you whether the product is the best value for your home. Two certified windows may differ in construction, frame strength, air leakage, glass area, hardware, warranty coverage, and price.
ENERGY STAR certification also cannot tell you whether the installer will measure the opening correctly or seal the window properly. Use the certification as one part of your decision, not the entire decision.
Triple-pane windows can provide a lower U-factor and improved sound control compared with many double-pane products. That does not automatically make them the best value for every Oklahoma homeowner.
A quality double-pane window with the proper Low-E glass package can provide strong performance in our area at a more practical price. The added cost and weight of triple-pane glass should be compared with the actual improvement in the ratings—not just the number of panes.
Ask to see the U-factor, SHGC, VT, and price for both configurations. That gives you a real comparison instead of a sales pitch.
The same manufacturer may offer several window styles with different performance results.
A fixed picture window typically seals very tightly because it does not open. Casement windows can also provide strong air-leakage performance because the sash presses against the weatherstripping when locked.
Double-hung and sliding windows are designed to move along tracks. A well-built unit can still perform efficiently, but its ratings may not be identical to those of a fixed or compression-sealed window.
This does not mean you should choose every window based on the lowest air-leakage number. The window still has to provide the ventilation, appearance, and operation you want.
Better-performing windows can reduce heat transfer, solar heat gain, and drafts. They may also make certain rooms feel more comfortable.
However, homeowners should be cautious when anyone promises an exact reduction in their utility bills. Energy use is affected by the home’s insulation, ductwork, HVAC equipment, thermostat settings, air leakage, shade, and personal habits.
Replacing old, inefficient windows can be a worthwhile improvement, but honest window advice should focus on measurable product performance and realistic comfort benefits—not exaggerated savings promises.
A high-performance window will only perform as intended when it is installed correctly.
During replacement, the installer may uncover damaged wood, an opening that is out of square, missing insulation, or old caulking that has failed. These issues must be handled correctly before the job is finished.
A proper installation should include careful measuring, secure fastening, insulation around the frame where appropriate, exterior weather sealing, and clean interior and exterior finishing.
This is one reason it can be misleading to compare quotes using the window brand alone. You are buying the product and the installation as a complete system.
Before signing a contract, ask the company for clear answers to these questions:
